Art and Agriculture

Several times a year, we host art exhibitions through our alternative art project, Cultivator. CSA members and invited guests enjoy a fun and casual afternoon of art by established area artists, meet new friends, share in food and conversation, and participate in tours of Bray Grove Farm.

Past Cultivator Events

Bray Grove Farm and Cultivator featured Susannah Papish and Melissa Potter on Memorial Day, May 27, 2024. Melissa's exhibition, Dung Paper with Annabelle and Loretta displayed prints of the mules on handmade paper she made from their composted manure while Susannah's exhibition, Ova Anima consisted of egg tempera paintings made from our ducks eggs on the handmade paper. Both artists held demonstrations of papermaking and egg tempera painting.

Cultivator welcomed artists Jason Dunda and Larry Lee to Bray Grove Farm On October 8, 2023. In addition to Jason's exhibition of assemblage and sculpture, and Larry's exhibition of sculptures, the two performed their acclaimed International Chefs of Mystery! duo.

Cultivator presents two solo exhibitions during Bray Grove Farm's Spring Farm Day on Memorial Day, May 29, 2023. Claire Helen Ashley's Prairie Pods featured her colossal inflatable sculptures and Tariq Tamir exhibited a sculptural assemblage titled Cultivators: The Way of Women.

Bray Grove Farm's Autumn Farm Day, October 16, 2022 hosted Cultivator with two artists. Alexandra Antoine's Pathways: On Reflecting, Wisdom and Meditation consisted of a labyrinth on the lee of the windbreak and Robin Dluzen's Ancestral Light featured painted repurposed banners placed in the meadow.

Cultivator at Bray Grove Farm, May 22, 2022 featured Indira Freitas Johnson's outdoor installation A Gathering of Energies, Labor and Love and an exhibition of paintings and drawings, The Mules of Bray Grove Farm and Other Working Equines, by Brenda Moore.

Cultivator at Bray Grove Farm, September 19, 2021 featuring two solo exhibitions during our Autumn Farm Day. Marginalia, an outdoor installation by Steven Carrelli and Passing hours, space in between, I am breathing your air, art installation by Yoonshin Park will be on view.

Our art exhibitions project, Cultivator, will be featuring the art installations of Diana Gabriel's "Architectural Collaboration"  and Vivian Visser's "Garden of Loss."

Cultivator's Memorial Day at Bray Grove Farm, Monday, May 29, 2017 from 2-5pm. Cultivator, our art exhibitions project will feature two solo exhibitions by Sherri Denault - Seeking Quiescence, and Ish Muhammad - Acknowledgement.

Bray Grove Farm's Autumn Farm Day, October 10, 2016 from 2-5pm. You are invited to join our family for an afternoon of conversation, art, appetizers (made with farm ingredients of course!), and a guided tour of the farm at 3pm. Our art exhibitions project, Cultivator, will be featuring the art of JB Daniel and Catherine Schwalbe in their respective solo exhibitions, Tending and Looking for Truth.

Joyce Owens will be the featured artist at our Chicago exhibition space, Cultivator. Join us for the opening reception of her solo exhibition Intent as Content, on Sunday, April 24, 2016 from 2-5pm, in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood.

Bill McBride and Tatjana Jovancevic are the featured artists at our exhibition space, Cultivator in Chicago. Join us for the opening reception of Glean, on Sunday, March 13th, 2016 from 2-5pm. We will hold a closing reception on Sunday, April 17th, from 2-5pm with an artists' talk at 3pm, in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood.

Rita Grendze will be the featured artist at our exhibition space, Cultivator in Chicago. Join us for the opening reception of Mid-sentence, on Sunday, January 10th, 2016 from 2-5pm and an artist talk and closing reception on February 7th, 2-5pm in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood.

Anne Harris will be the featured artist at our exhibition space, Cultivator in Chicago. Join us for the opening reception of Coddled and Bruised, on Sunday, November 1, 2015, 3-6pm and an artist talk and closing reception on December 13th 3-6pm.

Bray Grove Farm's Harvest Day and Farm Tour Sunday, October 18, 2015 from 2-5pm. Meet our farm family, mingle with new friends, nibble on some farm dishes, and take a guided tour of the farm!

Join us on Labor Day 2015, for a reception on the Farm for artist Kate Ingold.  Our first Cultivator exhibition is an installation at Bray Grove Farm titled "Study of the Forbidden Stitch," part of the Terrain Biennial, an international exhibition of outdoor and site specific installation art.

In addition, join us as we inaugurate our Chicago Cultivator Exhibition space on Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 2-5pm for the opening reception of  Kate Ingold's solo exhibit, "The Relatively Brief Preponderance of Moments." The exhibition will be up through October 17.
